Before there was a Santa Claus

There was a hungry child

With no place to sleep

And not much to wear.

Before there was a Santa Claus

There was an innkeeper

With no rooms to rent

And not too much time.

Before there was a Santa Claus

A man reached out in love,

Made room in a barn,

And offered bread.

The child could not eat the gold

Or wrap himself in the myrrh

Or comfort himself with

The frankincense.

Before there was a Santa Claus

A harried innkeeper

With little to give

Gave all that he could

And water turned to wine

Two coins became a treasure

A few fish fed five thousand

Because Love was born

Before there was a Santa Claus.
